Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if my brake discs or pads need changing?

The most common braking component that needs replacing is the set of brake pads on the front or rear wheels.

All modern cars use disc brakes at the front where an hydraulically operated brake caliper pushes brake pads onto the steel disc.  There’s a pad on each side of the disc and they’re effectively clamped together by the hydraulic force of the caliper. The system is designed for the pads to wear out quicker than the discs do as they’re much cheaper to replace. Driving style and conditions have a large bearing on how long a set of pads will last so there’s no defined replacement period as such.

You can check the wear of the pads yourself by a quick inspection, please check your car manual for the acceptable limits.  If you are in doubt, please call us as soon as possible.

  • Can my suspension be upgraded?

In most cases, yes.  We can upgrade your suspension if you require.  Most modern cars have acceptable suspension and we will do our upmost to optimise its performance should you be experiencing any problems.

  • What is brake bleeding?

Air in the brake system can make your brake pedal feel spongy and vague.  Your brakes should be bled in order to remove any air and improve brake performance.  Platinum Vehicle Services are specialists in this area and can determine your vehicles requirements if you are unsure.
